As we welcome spring it’s time to think about prepping your garden for summer so you can obtain the perfect summer garden.

Referring back to our monthly lawn care planner, April is the month where you should be aiming to mow your lawn at regular intervals. We suggest investing in a Hayter lawn mower; famed for making the finest mowers. You can see our review on this brand here.

With regards to obtaining the perfect summer garden, your aim for this month is to keep your grass at a healthy height without it becoming unmanageable.

Maintenance is key for this time of month as making sure to keep those pesky weeds from growing will seem like a full time job! The healthier your garden is the more difficult it is for weeds to grow. The best way to tackle any weed is to kill it as soon as you see it, rather than leaving it to grow for a bit

When a new year starts the last thing you’re probably thinking about is lawn care. However, here at World of Mowers we have come up with a simple guide of what you need to do each month to look after your garden. Follow this guide from January to December and you will have a lush garden year after year.

January

January is the month where you can put your feet up because all you have to do is brush away any debris and keep off the grass, especially if it’s frozen.

February

Spring is slowly creeping back, so this month you will need to rake your grass thoroughly. Mid-way through the month it is recommended that you aerate your lawn to relieve compaction, improve drainage and allow more air into the roots.

March

The hard work kicks in this month as the growth rate for your grass should start to accelerate. You should be prepared to mow your lawn for this first time this year using a high quality mower. Make sure you only cut

A recent survey last month showed that gardening equipment is at the top of the list for the most borrowed things between neighbours. This means instead of owning your own lawn mower or chainsaw it has become more common to borrow from your friends and your family.

So how come this is happening? Most people are under the misconception that gardening equipment is too expensive and shockingly they don’t see it as a long term investment.

With more housing properties including gardens now, gardening equipment has branched out becoming more accessible and cheaper for the average consumer.

At World of Mowers we have a large and affordable range of gardening equipment for everybody from chainsaws to shovels. If you are guilty of borrowing your neighbours rake then snap out of the habit and view our collection of Wolf multi-star rakes starting from only £7.99. It feels as if we have barely had a summer this year so when it comes to thinking about winter lawn care it seems as if we are always preparing for the cold months rather than the warm ones!

Grass barely grows throughout the winter months so you don’t need to be constantly mowing your lawn, the best approach is to let your lawn rest as much as possible during winter so you can have a lush lawn come spring/summer time. It is advised to keep off wet or frosty grass otherwise you will damage your lawn, the grass will not be able to repair it’s self until the spring if it is impaired throughout the winter.

Mowing

As discussed previously, it is not necessary to continuously mow your lawn as the growth rate will rapidly slow. Depending on the weather conditions and temperatures your grass will either continue to grow or not, if it looks like it needs a trim then mow if necessary. However, never mow your grass if heavy frosts are predicted to follow shortly or

We all aspire for the perfect lawn, but nothing quite looks as good as a well striped lawn on a beautiful summer’s day. The SP505R is a high specification rear roller mower ideal for maintaining exactly this.  It is powered by a 160cc Honda GCV160 OHC recoil start engine and features a forged aluminium chassis which carries a 20 year anti-corrosion warranty.

There are a fair few manufacturers of 'Roller' mowers around, however what the Mountfield SP505R has is a very sturdy steel roller on the back, heavy enough to give those pleasing stripes and also stops the machine from going off the edge of the lawn into surrounding greenery. The engine (a Honda) starts easily and the controls are simple to operate. The four speed transmission offers ground speeds to suit all cutting conditions and the grass collector works extremely well on dry or damp grass.

So if you’re going for that fantastic Wimbledon look the Mountfield SP505r really is the mower for you!

In the UK it’s often a rarity that we get the chance to enjoy the summer sunshine, but when we do, we like to enjoy the most of it in our garden with friends and family. It’s fair to say that relaxing on a great looking green lawn makes the summer experience even more pleasurable. But for a lawn this can be the most stressful time of the year. So what can we do to help our lawn look its best?

Watering
Summer is the time when drought can occur and a lawn can turn brown and straw coloured. The most important thing we can do is give it a much deserved drink. Your lawn typically needs between 1 and 1.5 inches of water per week. If it’s really hot and your lawn starts to yellow you may need to increase this. Try to water your lawn once a week rather than spreading your watering out. The general rule here is early morning or in the evening, which probably suits most homeowners. Remember to follow any local regulations when using water in summer (especially with current hosepipe bans).

Mowing
As temperatures hot up and

Mowing the grass in the rain can be miserable and without the correct equipment, you will not be doing the grass any favours either. Some commercial mowers such as the Mountfield S461 and the Hayter Motif 53 can handle the task; most residential lawn mowers aren't up to it. At best, you may end up with a badly cut lawn. At worst, you can end up with ruts and dead patches that are a pain to repair.

There are numerous of reasons why rain gives grass the upper hand when you try to mow, Grass behaves like people when it's getting rained on: it hunches over. The result is that many blades of grass get pushed over, not cut, when you try to mow. At least until the sun comes up, when all of the uncut grass should once again stand at attention. Some of the wet grass may stick to the mower blades, making it cut less efficiently.

Wet grass can stick to the mower's undercarriage, eventually getting thick enough to impede the mower blades and slow their rotation, further diminishing the mower's cutting ability.

Most mowers have mulching blades that create suction. Cut

As the trees blossom and the flowers start to bloom you might start to think about the aesthetics of your garden. Preparing your garden over the spring months will be important for a fantastic looking garden in the summer. Here’s how you should approach spring lawn care.

Begin with Raking
Raking your lawn is one of the most important things you can do in the spring to get a healthy lawn. Make sure the ground is relatively dry and isn't soft and squishy. By raking, you pull out all the old dead grass and lift up some of the matted grass to keep fungus problems to a minimum. It does take a considerable amount of elbow grease, but it really is the best thing you can do for your lawn. A good raking in the spring effectively acts like a basic de-thatching that helps the thickness of the grass in the summer.

Feeding and Fertilizing
A good feed with a lawn fertiliser, not only makes the grass greener, but it makes it grow thicker and increases its strength, vigour and health. This will make the grass more robust and better equipped to compete with weeds, moss and

As we head towards March it may be a bit early to think about cutting the lawn especially as it may still be covered with frost. However it’s not too early to think about preparing your lawn to be cut. Over the winter while the grass doesn’t grow particularly long but there does tend to be growth of moss and grass thatch.

This moss and grass thatch growth won’t be removed with a traditional lawn mower. While raking and lawn rakers will remove the growth of moss, the wires used in rakes are not great at dethatching a lawn. Using a lawn scarifier is more effective than a rake as it has steel cutting blades that cut the thatch and prune the lawn as the lawn is cut downwards rather than cross cut that is done in mowing.

While March is the time for lawn scarifying, it shouldn’t be done if your lawn doesn’t need it. Brown grass or spongy grass doesn’t necessarily indicate thatch growth as they can be caused by other issues, the best idea is to take a sample of the lawn, and check for thatching between the grass and the soil anything from

When it comes to buying gardening equipment, many people think it should only be a summer pursuit but there are actually things to do in the garden all year round and you should be taking advantage of the time of year to keep your garden in check.

In the winter while the main vegetation has died back, it’s the time to get a chainsaw and trim back any overhanging trees and bushes. Tackling these kinds of jobs in the summer can make the job a lot bigger than it needs to me with all the new summer regrowth. A crisp winter afternoon with a stihl petrol chainsaw or a lightweight Bosch electric chainsaw can trim your garden back to state that is ready for the summer regrowth.

Along with a chainsaw it might be worth getting a shredder to dispose of garden debris our collection of lightweight garden shredders are portable and designed to be quiet, so you can make sure the garden is tidy without disturbing the neighbours. The garden shredders including hoppers to capture the debris, the shredder helps minimise garden waste by compacting the waste down and the lightweight shredders are easily

A Landscape Gardener or architect is responsible for the outdoor space making it in an attractive way. To create the designs, the architects need to use computer software called CAD (computer-aided Design). It provides both creative and practical support to transform your garden.

In most cases, the landscape gardener begins with an initial client to look at the garden and discuss client needs and what they are looking for out of it. This is usually followed by a survey. On the 2nd meeting, this is to discuss generally about the budget and a more precise plan. The garden designer then starts to put into place the concept and ideas, with a working master plan with 3D perspectives. Once it is finished, the specifications are passed on to landscape contractors to price accurately.

Whenever starting a landscaping project, a consideration you should look at is what kind of tools do you need? If you are new to the job, finding the right tools is very important, so talk to one of the representative at World of Mowers who will help you to choose the right ones. Choosing the right tools for your projects makes gardening much easier.
